Virginia Tech will exhibit at the Consumer Electronics Show

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) will start the new year by driving into the global spotlight in Las Vegas.

VTTI and Virginia Tech’s Innovation and Partnerships Office will display their advanced transportation safety research at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Jan. 9-12. Billed as “The Most Powerful Tech Event in the World,” CES brings together global innovators, industry experts, policymakers, and media to discuss breakthrough and emerging technologies each year.

The VTTI team will be at Booth #7240-LVCC West Hall, during the event.

This year’s showcase will include VTTI’s expertise and its Level 4 autonomous Ford F-150, fresh off the successful Safely Operating Automated Driving Systems demonstrations in Arlington. The demonstrations were part of a five-year effort to help solve challenges that public safety officials experience.

Level 4 autonomy includes a vehicle being able to successfully operate without the expectation of a driver taking over. Building up to the demonstration, researchers from VTTI automated the Ford F-150 with a variety of features and functionality that were used to demonstrate how various technologies can be used to help solve concerns while operating a vehicle in this level of autonomy.

In addition to the vehicle being on display, institute researchers will also be available to discuss the following topics:

• Turning research into practice: The Sharing the Road Program with Large Trucks teaches driver’s education students to safely drive and share the road with semi-trucks through interactive and classroom education.
• Creating data-driven solutions: The institute’s extensive library of naturalistic driving data can bring disparate data sources together to make data actionable and answer the transportation sector’s greatest questions.
• Ehancing automation: VTTI ensures that advanced driver-assistance system technologies remain safe through robust evaluation of both naturalistic data and virtual assessment from the perspective of the system performance and the human factor perspectives.
• Future collaborations: Partnering with VTTI and Virginia Tech allows for retaining top talent, solving research and development challenges, staying on the leading edge of innovation, encouraging inclusion and diversity, and tapping into a broader network of partners and programs. The Innovation and Partnerships Office team will be available to discuss how to partner with Virginia Tech.
