Five Computer Science major students from William & Mary, including Kevin Wu, Joseph Lee, Nicholas Wilson, Stephen Hoag, and Kyle Chen, were invited to participate in the inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Innovation Challenge hosted by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). The competition, held at the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren Campus (UMW-Dahlgren) from March 2-4, focused on developing cutting-edge AI/ML algorithms for automating the scheduling and coordination of advanced weapon systems. The competition had two phases; Contestants were required to submit a white paper in the first, followed by a demonstration of their AI/ML algorithm's warfighting capabilities in the second. William & Mary's team secured third place and a prize of $20,000, while Carnegie Mellon's team took first place and Virginia Tech second, winning $50,000 and $30,000, respectively.
