CCI xG Testbed

The CCI xG Testbed is built and operated by the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) and accessible by CCI researchers and our industry and government partners. The CCI xG Testbed emphasizes programmability and interoperability, relying whenever possible on open interfaces and open-source software. Key areas of capabilities include securing 5G and next generation mobile networks, and AI assurance.
Core principles of the CCI xG Testbed include:
- Openness: we rely on open standards, open interfaces, and open-source software to allow experimentation with new technologies at the pre-commercial stage
- Accessibility: the testbed allows remote access by CCI researchers and our collaborators, as well as by students in CCI institutions
- Programmability: we rely on hardware and software solutions that enable programmability, from the end devices to the core of the network to the applications and services
- Interoperability: we ensure interoperability with other hardware and software solutions, including commercial products, and other testbeds
- Modularity: we adopt containerized, cloud-native implementations with open APIs

CCI xG Testbed: Next Generation Networks
The CCI xG Testbed enables design, development, prototyping and deployment of solutions for next generation mobile networks. We operate an advanced reconfigurable, open and intelligent wireless testbed that supports real-world experimentation with new communication technologies and applications. The CCI xG Testbed architecture has a particular focus on cybersecurity and features autonomous, intelligent and low latency wireless communication coupled with edge cloud computing capability. Our indoor deployment at Virginia Tech in Arlington, VA, includes approximately 70 advanced software-defined radio nodes along with fiber-optic back-haul networks and edge and core cloud computing infrastructure. Researchers are able to run experiments remotely on the testbed having access to hardware and software that enables radio configuration, experiment execution, and data collection. The testbed also enables experimenters to bring their own devices and integrate them to the existing infrastructure to perform end-to-end experiments.
