A Message from the Executive Director
|
|
Dear <<First Name>>,
October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month, has flown by! I have a lot of news to cover, so let’s get started.
First, a hearty congratulations to the CCI-led team that won the National Intelligent Water Systems Competition earlier this month! Their winning project could be adopted by other municipalities in the future.
The CCI team collaborated with DC Water to develop the project, featuring a new, three-way solution that uses advanced artificial intelligence models and data science to protect against cyber threats, predict water flows and levels, and optimize energy efficiency and environmental safety. It’s a great example of how CCI research is having a direct impact on our communities.
You’ll be hearing more about this team in the future. Until then, read more and watch the video.

Experience cybersecurity through the arts on Nov. 4-5 at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Va.
|
|
It’s two years in the making and worth the wait! Five CCI-funded art and design projects will be exhibited for the first time on Nov. 4-5 at the Taubman Museum. Please share this information with friends and family.
At the free, interactive exhibit:
- Listen to musicians collaborate in real-time without being in the same room, thanks to AI and a 5G network. (Tanner Upthegrove, immersive audio specialist, Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) and the Center for Human-Computer Interaction, Virginia Tech)
- Test your cybersecurity detection skills by playing a fun game. (Kevin Moberly, program director, Game Design, Development, and Criticism, Old Dominion University)
- Lost or tossed your smartphone without erasing your information? The Undeleted project, which features 80 smartphones, shows you’re not alone. (Michael McDermott, assistant professor, Art, George Mason University)
- Hear what a cyberattack sounds like in a room filled with loudspeakers. (Upthegrove)
- Watch dancers moving through a choreographed performance that’s part of an artificial intelligence (AI) project designed to protect against using how we move to determine our identities. (Kate Sicchio, assistant professor, dance and media technologies, Virginia Commonwealth University)

CCI Coastal Virginia Node dives into experiential learning
|
|
The inaugural National COVA CCI Cybersecurity Education & Research Conference was held in late September. The conference brought together leaders from a variety of backgrounds to support experiential learning in cybersecurity.
“Cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary field,” said Stephanie Blackmon, an associate professor in the William & Mary School of Education and one of the conference’s steering committee members. “It is imperative that we build strong relationships across disciplines and organization types to create the meaningful experiential learning opportunities students will need to be successful in technology and cybersecurity-related careers.”

Students exploring cybersecurity
|
|
Twenty students from Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, and William & Mary are participating in an independent study program focused on cybersecurity. As part of the Fall 2022 CCI Coastal Virginia Node Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Program, students will present their research at a virtual research showcase on Dec. 15, 2022.
|
|
Virginia Tech and Virginia Military Institute students in the CCI Southwest Virginia Node are working on such projects as:
- A hardware-in-the-loop network testbed for small satellites
- A drone racing competition
- Security enhancements for 5G/NextG
- Experiential learning in agriculture
- Cryptography
- Use and abuse of personal information
- Power grids
- Analyzing wireless networks
- Polar coding
- Security and machine learning

Updated CCI Fellows requirements
|
|
CCI Fellows play an important role in the creation of new centers. Please review the following changes to the requirements for the CCI Fellows CFP.
Proposals must involve at least two CCI institutions of higher education from any CCI Node. A CCI institution of higher education must play a coordination role in the project. The budget associated with CCI institutions in the center-scale proposal must be at least $2 million.
