A Message from the Executive Director

Dear <<First Name>>,

One of the major drivers of CCI is our ability to unite the strengths of Virginia universities and colleges to compete for large multimillion dollar projects.

I’m excited to announce two 2022-23 CCI Fellows who will be using the accompanying award to pursue large center-scale proposals. The projects are exciting and could change how we go about our daily lives.

New CCI Fellow Aidong Zhang, William Wulf Faculty Fellow and computer science professor at the University of Virginia, is leading a proposal called “Intelligent Ambient Computing in Dynamic Environments” for the National Science Foundation’s Expeditions in Computing program.

Similar to smartphones becoming integrated into our lives, ambient computing is expected to be commonplace. In this scenario, users will continually and subconsciously interact with their surroundings, and devices will respond to human actions automatically, collectively, continuously, and smartly, explains Zhang, who also has joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Data Science at UVA.

Returning CCI Fellow Jack Davidson is well known for leading top projects, including the $3 million Virginia Cyber Navigator Program, which helps secure state voting systems while providing internships for students.

Davidson is using the CCI Fellowship to develop a proposal, in collaboration with Virginia Tech, UVA, and Old Dominion University, for the NSF Grand Community Research Infrastructure award. This project’s objective is to create a multi-campus data-collection, curation, and sharing infrastructure for use by the NSF Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) community of cybersecurity and privacy researchers. This federated infrastructure will be invaluable for developing new machine-learning algorithms for detecting zero-day attacks and large-scale attacks with complex kill chains, Davidson explains.

CyberArts CFP opening soon

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative’s Building Bridges Arts and Design Collaboration Program funded five projects to connect Virginia’s arts and design community with cybersecurity researchers. These projects were displayed together for the first time in a free exhibition at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Va.

The results of our first CyberArts program yielded a museum exhibit and projects with potential commercial appeal. The art and design projects have given people a new way to look at cybersecurity. We’re excited to open the next call early next month (stay tuned for more information). We plan to hold an info session on Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. Learn more about the first funded projects and exhibit or watch the video.

Cheers,

Luiz DaSilva
