New Cyber Pre-Apprentice Program
Oct. 1 deadline

Applications are due Oct. 1 for the CCI-funded Cyber Pre-Apprenticeship Program, which is a 2023 CCI Experiential Learning Program project. Virginia community college students who are already taking cybersecurity-related classes or who may be considering a career in cybersecurity are encouraged to learn more about the 16-week paid program. The project is led by Stephanie J. Blackmon, associate professor, William & Mary School of Education.

ODU awarded $1 million SBA grant

Congratulations to Sachin Shetty for leading a $1 million grant by the U.S. Small Business Administration to help small businesses in Virginia advance cybersecurity infrastructure and mitigate cyber threats. Sachin is the executive director at the Center for Secure and Intelligent Critical Systems at Old Dominion University, part of the Virginia Modeling, Analysis & Simulation Center (VMASC). ODU was one of six recipients of a $6 million Cybersecurity for Small Business Pilot Program grant that was announced last month.

Danville Community College training new cybersecurity experts with grant

 

 Danville Community College created the DCC Cyber Security Short-term Training Initiative last month with an inaugural cohort of 17 participants, thanks to an $850,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The 16-week program is certified by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency to train new cybersecurity experts.

Our partnerships with industry continue to evolve, creating richer experiential learning experiences for Virginia students. Watch this video to hear from CACI chief technology officer Glenn Kurowski and students from George Mason University and Virginia Military Institute.

New CCI Tech Transfer Support Fund

We want to help faculty get their commercial ideas out of the lab. We’re now offering technology transfer support funding to faculty at primarily undergraduate institutions to facilitate research commercialization efforts. Eligible faculty may apply for grants up to $8,000 to support patent application fees, legal fees, or other professional support. The program also includes support from ICAP (Innovation Commercialization Assistance Program).

CCI Southwest Virginia Annual
Meeting on Oct. 3

CCI researchers in Southwest Virginia are encouraged to attend the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) Southwest Virginia Annual Meeting on Oct. 3 to celebrate shared accomplishments and look ahead to the coming year.

ODU’s NSF CyberCorps
Scholarship for Service

Old Dominion University’s School of Cybersecurity inducted eight students into its Cyber LeADERS Scholars Program on Sept. 15 and recognized six students from its 2022 cohort. Cyber LeADERS is a partnership between ODU, Tidewater Community College, and Virginia Peninsula Community College that was created in 2021 through funding from the National Science Foundation's CyberCorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) initiative.

Meet Up to Startup

We’re helping aspiring entrepreneurs connect with leading Virginia investors during our Meet Up to Startup program. Students and faculty in the CCI network of Virginia universities and colleges are welcome to attend. We have sessions in every region this fall.

Clearance Preparedness Program

Join us for the next Clearance Preparedness Program virtual module on Oct. 25, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom, to learn about federal opportunities. Our final session is Nov. 29 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and covers social media considerations. You can also view past modules on our website.

First srsRAN Project Fall Workshop

CCI partner Software Radio Systems (SRS) is hosting its first global workshop to bring together the 5G radio access network (RAN) community. The workshop will be held Oct. 23-24 at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington. This two-day event will feature keynote presentations, panel sessions, demonstrations and a hands-on workshop.

CyberCon2023

Fun and games at CyberCon 2023. ODU researcher Kevin Moberly demonstrates the next level of the Net-Tech Warriors game, which was funded by CCI’s CyberArts program in 2020.
I had the pleasure of discussing CCI’s experiential learning programs at CyberCon 2023, held at Old Dominion University this month, with a highly engaged audience of students, educators, and government and industry cybersecurity professionals.

Embedded CTF competition open

Students are invited to register for an embedded security competition run by MITRE. Participants work on creating a secure system, learning from their mistakes. Registration is open now for the 2024 Embedded Capture the Flag (eCTF).
