This CCI-funded experiential learning project at the Virginia Commonwealth University will allow 10 undergraduate and graduates a year to work hands-on with the Virginia State Police Computer Evidence Recovery Section in digital forensics.

A Message from the Executive Director

Dear <<First Name>>,

The new semester is bringing fresh opportunities, especially experiential learning projects designed to help prepare students for cybersecurity careers.

Experiential learning projects are an essential part of CCI’s mission. This summer, we invested about $900,000 in nine experiential learning projects, covering such crucial research areas as election security, privacy protection, and digital forensics.

The diverse projects are led by researchers at the College of William and Mary, George Mason University, Old Dominion University, Radford University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Military Institute, and Virginia Tech.

Students working on the projects help advance research while learning key skills that will serve them well in the cybersecurity field.

One such project––Digital Forensics Experiential Learning Program with Virginia State Police led by Irfan Ahmed, an associate computer science professor at Virginia Commonwealth––is looking for students to join the team.

New Call for Proposals: Securing Interactions between
Humans and Machines

I'm excited to announce our first CFP dedicated to securing the interactions between humans and machines. Recent evolution in artificial intelligence, cyber physical systems, and communications are leading to a world in which humans and autonomous machines increasingly interact. At CCI, we view cybersecurity as intrinsically cross-disciplinary and devise solutions that lead to secure, resilient, and harmonious interactions between people and robots, drones, autonomous vehicles, and other cyber physical systems. I'm looking forward to reading your submission.

CCI researchers work on a winning plan to keep water systems safe and secure

A team led by CCI researcher Feras A. Batarseh has moved to the final round of the prestigious national 2022 Intelligent Water Systems Challenge. The Virginia Tech team partnered with DC Water to develop a new, comprehensive three-way solution that uses cutting-edge AI models and data science technologies.

“Our entry shows how deep learning and AI Assurance can help keep something as essential as our water systems secure from the rising threat of cyber attacks while increasing operational efficiency,” said Batarseh, an associate professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech.

Quantum Bootcamp

Watch the video: Bootcamp focuses on quantum research

Wayne Scales, professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, hosted a bootcamp in August gathering computer scientists, electrical engineers, physicists, and chemists from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the burgeoning field of quantum information science and engineering.

CCI Southwest Virginia supported the inaugural workshop, which also featured the CCI xG Testbed.

Save the Date: Cybersecurity Arts and Design Exhibit on Nov. 4-5 at the Taubman Museum of Art
in Roanoke, Virginia

From dance moves to private information on discarded smartphones, a new arts exhibit at Roanoke’s Taubman Museum of Art offers a fresh take on cybersecurity

We funded five projects to connect Virginia’s arts and design community with cybersecurity researchers. These projects will be displayed together for the first time on Nov. 4-5.

  • Watch dancers moving through a choreographed performance that’s part of an artificial intelligence (AI) project designed to protect against using how we move to determine our identities.

  • Hear what a cyberattack sounds like, thanks to a room filled with loudspeakers.

  • Lost or tossed your smartphone without erasing your information? The Undeleted project, which features 80 smartphones, shows you’re not alone in this eye-opening exhibit.

  • Test your cybersecurity detection skills by playing a cybersecurity-themed board game.

  • Listen to musicians collaborate in real-time without being in the same room, thanks to AI and a 5G network.

Save the date: CCI Innovation Boot Camp Applications Open October 17

At the CCI Innovation Boot Camp, students of Virginia higher education public institutions learn how to make their inventions and new ideas come to life.

Students of Virginia higher education public institutions are invited to submit a 60-second personal pitch video on why they should be admitted into the Innovation Boot Camp when applications open on October 17, 2022. This year's Innovation Boot Camp will be held Jan. 3-6, 2023 at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington, Va.  Read about last year’s camp.

CCI Leadership Council discuss research at Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center

Hector Garcia, Old Dominion University, Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC), and Sachin Shetty, ODU, VMASC, discuss cybersecurity research funded by CCI with Elspeth McMahon, ODU associate vice president for maritime initiatives, Susie Kuliasha, CCI, and Machelle Hall, CCI Southwest at VMASC in Suffolk, Va., as part of the CCI Leadership Retreat.

The new school year is bringing inspiring research projects and fresh opportunities. We’re also expanding our impact and demonstrating how the CCI xG Testbed can help develop and test innovative and secure wireless communications applications. See demonstrations at our booth at the Mobile World Congress Las Vegas on Sept. 27-30 or at our home base in Arlington.

Cheers,
