A Message from the Executive Director
Dear <<First Name>>,
We kicked off the first Meet Up to Startup event last week in Arlington, Va. More than two dozen venture capitalists, students, and researchers gathered to discuss how to turn their ideas and research into businesses.
Venture capital firms in attendance included Blu Venture Investors, Squadra, Dreamit Ventures, and DataTribe, as well as our own CATAPULT Fund.
“We’re early-stage investors, so by making connections with students in the very early stages and learning about their ideas, we can start to see what’s happening in the ecosystem,” said Josh Miller, an investor with Blu Venture, who also will be speaking on a panel at the CCI Symposium in April.
CCI events such as Meet Up to Startup connect students and researchers with programs such as Virginia’s Innovation Commercialization Assistance Program, which helps startups from ideation to commercialization, said TJ Master, an ICAP technology mentor, who presented at the 2022 CCI Symposium.
The next Meet Up to Startup will be March 22, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. There also will be events in Southwest Virginia and Coastal Virginia.

CyberArts Call for Proposals is open
Artists and designers can offer people a fresh way to look at cybersecurity. Our first CyberArts program yielded delightful and insightful results, culminating in a well-attended museum exhibit last fall. We’re building on that success with a new call that closes on April 1.
If you missed the online information session on Feb. 23, watch the video here. Are you a technical person who is looking for an artistic collaborator, or vice versa? We can help you make connections.

CCI researchers get out of the office and go to the barn
CCI researchers recently hopped into a Gator farm vehicle with an antenna and spectrum analyzer along for the ride and drove around Virginia Tech’s Animal Husbandry Barn and other locales to do advance work for the university’s first private mobile network.
The private network, which will be deployed around Stroubles Creek to service public safety and smart agriculture applications, is expected to start rolling out this summer. The network is based on Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) and will add a crucial outdoor component to the CCI xG Testbed, allowing our researchers to test security solutions to be incorporated in the next generation of mobile networks.
CCI postdoctoral researcher Joao Santos and CCI graduate research assistants Oren Collaco and Asheesh Tripathi had some unusual coworkers during this stint––cows. No cows will be harmed as part of our deployment, Santos said, as the antennas will generate non-ionizing radiation, at power levels much lower than FCC ceilings.

Workforce Development for AI Assurance
CCI undergraduate students attended the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Conference on AI held earlier this month in Washington, D.C., to learn more about workforce development opportunities in AI, says CCI researcher Feras Batarseh. The session was led by faculty from University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Rutgers University, Tufts University, and Virginia Tech.
