Non-Terrestrial Networks: 5G-Advanced and Beyond

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) kicks off its Fall 2021 Seminar Series –– Dr. Nishith D. Tripathi is the first speaker. This will be a hybrid in-person and virtual event.

Non-Terrestrial Networks––satellite communications, high altitude platform systems (HAPS), and air-to-ground networks––using 5G technology are expected to change transportation, energy, public safety, eHealth, and more. Securing 5G-based networks, whether on earth or above it, is crucial.

With more than 24 years in the cellular industry, Nishith D. Tripathi has been forefront of wireless technologies such as 4G, 5G, and now 6G. Tripathi will discuss how a Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) is an example of the evolution of 5G technology. He’ll delve further into the security framework used in 5G-based terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, detailing the technical challenges and possible solutions for NTNs. Plus, he’ll give a glimpse into what the world of 6G may look like.

Formerly a Samsung Research America researcher, Tripathi is an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Tech, where he teaches cellular communications, guides students in their research projects, and collaborates with faculty members and industry partners on various research projects.

With more than 24 years in the cellular industry, Tripathi has been at the forefront of wireless technologies such as 4G, 5G, and 6G. He has co-authored the cellular industry’s first multimedia book on 5G as well as a textbook on Cellular Communications. As a researcher at Samsung Research America (SRA), Tripathi  contributed to the 3GPP Release 17 specifications for the Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN). Tripathi also has contributed to Samsung’s 6G vision paper and developed articles and presentations for Samsung executives. As a technology lead at Award Solutions, a leading wireless communications training provider, Tripathi developed in-depth and comprehensive technical content on 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular technologies, covering RF planning and design, the radio interface, the radio network, the core network, and the services network for live commercial networks.

Tripathi has trained thousands of engineers and executives on commercial cellular networks in the areas such as 5G, LTE-Advanced Pro (LTE-M/eMTC, NB-IoT, LAA, and D2D/ProSe), LTE-Advanced, LTE, and IMS.

Tripathi has carried out design, operations, testing, and optimization of commercial wireless networks at Nortel Networks and Huawei Technologies. His pioneering research on the applications of AI in cellular networks at Virginia Tech has been published as a monograph and as part of a book on neuro-fuzzy applications. Tripathi has served as a subject matter expert in media interviews and responded to the Federal Communications Commission Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in various policy matters.

About CCI Events

With a mission of research, innovation, and workforce development, the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) focuses on the intersection of security, autonomous systems, and data. Funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia, CCI is a highly connected statewide network that engages institutions of higher education, industry, government, and nongovernmental and economic development organizations. CCI’s network includes 39 higher education institutions and 320 faculty members as well as more than 20 industry partners. CCI was established in the 2018-20 Virginia budget with an investment of approximately $20 million annually from 2020 and beyond. Follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
