James Aylor

James H. Aylor is the president of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. He is also a Louis T. Rader Professor of electrical and computer engineering and Dean Emeritus of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia

His research has focused on computer system design, including computer-based assistive devices. His accomplishments include participating in the development of the VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL), the development of a new mixed-level modeling technology to support the early phases of the computer systems design process, and the development and implementation of automatic test pattern-generation techniques.

Previous Roles

Aylor served for 11 years as the dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia, and served as associate dean of academic programs and chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Virginia.

Affiliations

Aylor a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) fellow, as well as past  president of the IEEE Computer Society. He also  served as a division director and a member of the IEEE board of directors. He was Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Computer, received by the more than 100,000 IEEE Computer Society members. 

He served as president of the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department Heads Association. He also served as an ABET visitor for electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science programs and was chair of the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET—a group that leads accreditation teams on computer science visits.  He also served as a member of the Executive Board of the National Engineering Deans Council.  

Education

Aylor received his bachelor’s of science degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia.
