Gretchen Matthews

Southwest Virginia Node Director

Gretchen Matthews is a professor of mathematics at Virginia Tech. Her research is in applications of algebraic geometry to data storage, protection, and security, especially coding theory and cryptography. Her coding theory research has considered desirable properties for cryptic applications, distributed storage systems, and algebraic geometry.

Her research has been sponsored by government agencies including NSF, as well as companies including IEEE and the MAA/Tensor Foundation.

Matthews received her B.S. in mathematics from Oklahoma State University in 1995 and her Ph.D. in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1999.
