Members of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative and invited guests will gather at the second annual event at the Omni Richmond Hotel.
Day One: April 17, 2023
11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Check-in, poster setup, and lunch
Faculty and student research project posters will be on display in the common areas and during the social hour. Poster creators will be available to describe their projects and answer questions. This is a great opportunity to see firsthand what our comunity is researching, interested in, and get a glimpse of the future of cybersecurity.
1 to 1:05 p.m. Opening remarks
Dan Sui, vice president of research and innovation, opens the symposium with welcoming remarks.
1:05 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.: State of CCI
CCI Executive Director Luiz DaSilva will then review CCI’s programs and achievements in cybersecurity research, workforce development and Innovation and highlights some of the great success stories of several of your CCI colleagues and students over the past year. He'll also lay out CCI’s path forward for the year ahead.
1:45 – 2:15 p.m.: Keynote speech
André Mendes, chief information officer at the U.S. Department of Commerce, will discuss cybersecurity innovation and workforce development, and academic opportunities with the CHIPS and Science Act.
2:15 – 2:45 p.m.: Break
2:45 – 3:30 p.m.: Tech Talk on Bias in AI
As Artificial Intelligence becomes more and more common in our everyday lives, listen to experts discuss how data and societal bias are impacting trust and acceptance of AI research, algorithms, and assumptions. Laura Freeman, director of the Intelligent Systems Lab in the Hume Center for National Security and Technology, will talk with Ben Harvey, CEO and founder of AI Squared.
3:30 - 4:30 p.m.: Fireside Chat on Cyber Investment
Venture capitalists from the cybersecurity sector will discuss the current landscape of cyber startup investment, as well as opportunities and how to avoid common pitfalls with technology commercialization. Sarah Hayes , Director of Innovation and Workforce Development for CCI, will talk with Josh Miller, an Investment Manager with Blu Venture Investors, and Seda Goff, Founder and General Partner of Flintlock Capital.
4:30 – 6 p.m.: Poster Presentation Session and Cocktail Reception
6 - 8 p.m.: Dinner and Awards Ceremony
Day Two: April 18, 2023
7 a.m.: CCI 5K (optional)
8 - 9 a.m.: Breakfast
9 - 11:30 a.m. (event one): Paper Presentations
Hear from researchers as they provide short briefings and answer questions about their current research projects. Take the opportunity to connect and network with collegues, which could lead to future collaboration efforts. There are three broad areas of paper presentations:
- Social Cybersecurity: Topics include Social Cybersecurity, Workforce Development, and Open & Crowd Sourcing
- NextG Cybersecurity. Topics include NextG and NextG in Network Security.
- Secure Systems. Topics include Cybersecurity, Autonomous Systems, the Internet of Things, and Quantum and Data Science.
9 - 11:30 a.m. (event two): Securing Human-Machine Interaction Workshop
Listen to each of the 15 research teams from CCI’s Fall 2022 Research Program “Securing Interactions between Humans and Machines” present a short briefing on their projects, answer questions, and discuss future research efforts in the field. It's a great networking opportunity.
