Get to Know Me

How I’d capture the essence of my work in a newspaper headline...

I'm fascinated by the power of machine learning, communications, and networking.

Something that excites me in my field...
is designing novel communication algorithms for machine learning and artificial intelligence.

My work impacts society...
by building better communication infrastructure and advancing machine learning.

Something I learned in my research this year that surprised me...
One has to really understand machine learning to design communication systems to support it.

Current University
University of Virginia

Research Area
Federated learning in wireless networks; reinforcement learning and multi-armed bandits; machine learning for wireless

Research Summary
Cong Shen's current research focuses on the interaction between various machine learning disciplines and wireless communication systems, including multi-armed bandit, reinforcement learning, and federated learning.

Background
Shen, an assistant professor of the University of Virginia's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, holds a B.E, M.E., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering.

Prior to joining UVA, he was a professor in the School of Information Science and Technology at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He also has extensive industry experience, having worked for Qualcomm Research, SpiderCloud Wireless, Silvus Technologies, and Xsense.ai, in various full-time and consulting roles.

Shen was the recipient of the Best Paper Award in 2021 IEEE International Conference on Communications, and the Excellent Paper Award in the 9th International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN 2017). Currently, he serves as an editor for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, and editor for the IEEE Wireless Communications Letters. He is the TPC co-chair of the Wireless Communications Symposium of IEEE Globecom 2021, and actively serves as (senior) program committee members/reviewers for Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics (AISTATS), International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), and AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). He is a member of SpectrumX, an NSF Spectrum Innovation Center.
