Zhi "Gerry" Tian’s current research focuses on distributed machine learning, decentralized network optimization, compressed sensing for random processes, cognitive radio, and millimeter-wave 5G communications.
Tian is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at George Mason University.
An IEEE Fellow, Tian served as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. She was a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society and the IEEE Communications Society. She is a Member-of-Large of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. She received a CAREER award from the US National Science Foundation in 2003.
From 2000 to 2014, she was on the faculty of Michigan Technological University, where she was promoted to full professor in 2011. From 2011 to 2014, she served as a program director at the National Science Foundation through an IPA assignment with Michigan Tech.
Tian received her B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, in 1994, and an M. S. and Ph.D. degree from George Mason University in 1998 and 2000 respectively.
