For AI techniques, he is interested in reinforcement learning, combinatorial optimization, and prediction.

For social domains, he works on public health, sustainability, cybersecurity, and problems with a network structure.


Haipeng Chen is an assistant professor of data science at William & Mary. 

Previously, he was a post-doc at Harvard University and Dartmouth College. He obtained his Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University. His primary research interest is in AI for the benefit of society. 

His research has been recognized with various awards at premier AI conferences and competitions such as IJCAI and AAMAS, and publications at premier AI conferences such as AAAI, IJCAI, KDD, NeurIPS, UAI, ICDM, and AAMAS. 

He regularly serves as chair of AI workshops/ conference sessions, and reviewer/meta-reviewer at premier AI conferences. 

As part of his research agenda, he has collaborated with non-profits in public health and sustainability domains.
